The best movie soundtracks

So a little while ago, while trying to think of music to download, I asked (on Facebook) what the best movie soundtracks were. I actually got a pretty good response from people, and after perusing through the list, I decided to make a list of my own. Here is my list of what I believe to be, the best movie soundtracks of all time. Leave a comment and tell me what you think I missed

Best Disney movie soundtrack: Mary Poppins (1964)

Sorry Alayna, I chose this over Tarzan. It was a close call.
Highlights: Well other than A Spoonful of Sugar, I rather like the song Sister Suffragette, sung by Mrs. Winnifred- "Though we adore men individually, we agree that as a group they're rather stupid!" The song about the crazy bird lady (Feed the Birds) also has a habit of getting stuck in my head. Yes, even amidst all of the soundtracks to animated Disney films, the Mary Poppins soundtrack is my favourite.

Best "Oldies" soundtrack: Stand By Me (1986)

Highlights: The Bobbettes - Mr. Lee, Buddy Holly - Everyday, The Chordettes - Lollipop

Best 70's soundtrack: Almost Famous (2000)

This whole soundtrack is really, really meaningful to me- perhaps my favourite movie soundtrack of all time.
Highlights: Original music from Stillwater. The songs that incite the most emotion within me from this soundtrack are: Simon and Garfunkel - America, Feel Flows - The Beach Boys, Elton John - Tiny Dancer and Mona Lisa's and Mad Hatters, Led Zeppelin - Tangerine

Best 80's soundtrack: Pretty in Pink (1986)

Highlights: Orchestral Manoeuvers in the Dark - If You Leave (Nada Surf do a great cover of this song), The Psychadelic Furs - Pretty in Pink, The Smiths - Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want

Best 90's soundtrack: Clueless (1995)

Another personal favourite soundtrack.
Highlights: The Muffs - Kids in America, World Party - All the Young Dudes (A David Bowie cover), Radiohead - Fake Plastic Trees (acoustic)

Best early 2000's soundtrack: Garden State (2004)

This is the soundtrack that I thought was the best soundtrack of all time, when I was 14.
Highlights: Cary Brothers - Blue Eyes, Simon and Garfunkel - The Only Living Boy in New York, Iron and Wine - Such Great Heights

Best Punk soundtrack: SLC Punk (1998)

This may seem super cliche but when I was younger, this movie was everything to me. The soundtrack gives me a lot of nostalgic feels.
Highlights: Blondie - Dreaming, Generation X - Kiss Me Deadly, Dead Kennedys - Kill the Poor

Best 90's Alt-rock soundtrack: Singles (1992)

This is the ultimate grunge movie. Set in Seattle, with appearances by members of Alice in Chains.
Highlights: Paul Westerberg - Dyslexic Heart, The Lovemongers - Battle of Evermore (Led Zeppelin cover), Paul Westerberg - Waiting for Somebody (okay I really like Paul Westerberg)

Best Rock & Roll soundtrack: Dazed and Confused (1993)

The best "school's out" movie.
Highlights: Rick Derringer - Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo, Sweet - Fox on the Run, Lynyrd Skynyrd - Tuesday's Gone

Best Rap/R&B soundtrack: The Wackness (2008)

Strangely enough, I haven't seen this movie. But I've recently read good things online about it and the soundtrack sounds amazing so I downloaded it and I plan to watch it soon

Best Motown soundtrack: The Big Chill (1983)

My dad's favourite movie soundtrack, so naturally one of mine as well.
Highlights: The Young Rascals - Good Lovin', Lesley Gore - You Don't Own Me, The Rolling Stones - You Can't Always Get What You Want (church version)

Best Rock Musical soundtrack/album: Purple Rain (1984)

I'll never forget the first time I saw this movie. I wasn't huge into Prince before that, but I emerged a changed woman. Now I worship him! There were a lot of other considerations for this category, but Prince rules all.
Highlights: Prince - Let's Go Crazy, When Doves Cry, I Would Die 4 U

Best Musical soundtrack: Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)

This is a no-brainer. Also quite possibly one of the best movie soundtracks of all time. I'm proud to say I know just about all the words to every song from this movie.
Highlights: Science Fiction/Double Feature, Hot Patootie - Bless My Soul, Rose Tint My World

Best Original soundtrack: Dirty Dancing (1987)

Okay, here's another crazy fact: I've never seen the movie Dirty Dancing. However, based on the responses I got from others, and from what I read online, apparently the Dirty Dancing soundtrack is absolutely amazing. Also on my to-watch list this summer. I promise

Best new movie soundtrack: Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)

Surprisingly, a Marvel movie provided one of the best soundtracks of 2014. It was interesting how they managed to fit a bunch of 60's and 70's dance songs into a film about aliens in space - but it actually worked.
Highlights: David Bowie - Moonage Daydream, Elvin Bishop - Fooled Around and Fell In Love, Redbone - Come and Get Your Love

Which producer has the best movie soundtracks altogether: Quentin Tarantino
Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, Jackie Brown, Death Proof, Kill Bill, the list goes on... Quentin Tarantino, or whoever does the music for his movies, really knows how to choose appropriate songs for the characters and plot line.
Highlights include: The beginning of Reservoir Dogs when all the men are walking to Little Green Bag by George Baker Selection. Also in Reservoir Dogs when Mr. Blonde cuts off the cops ear, and Stuck in the Middle With You by Stealers Wheel plays. In Pulp Fiction when Mia Wallace dances to Girl, You'll be a Woman Soon. Jackie Brown running through the airport to Bobby Womack - Across 110th Street

Best Quentin Tarantino soundtrack: Pulp Fiction (1994)

Highlights: Dick Dale - Misirlou, Dusty Springfield - Son of a Preacher Man, The Statler Brothers - Flowers on the Wall

Runner-up: Wes Anderson
The Royal Tenenbaums, Moonrise Kingdom, Rushmore, The Grand Budapest Hotel. Music plays an important role in all Wes Anderson movies, he has a knack of finding the perfect score to fit the films.
Highlights include: Seu Jorge - Queen Bitch from The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, The Rolling Stones - Street Fighting Man from Fantastic Mr. Fox, Francoise Hardy - Le Temps de L'amour in Moonrise Kingdom

Most of the reason my blog posts have been so sporadic over the past year or two, is that I was without a proper working computer. My laptops always break on me and I went almost all of 2014 without access to a computer at all. It gets kind of lonely with just an iPhone, sometimes. Recently, my loving boyfriend bought us a new computer. At first I sat and stared at the screen thinking "what do I do now?" and, after browsing the typical few sites I'd regularly look at on my phone, it occurred to me. Music! I haven't been able to update the music on my phone in over a year, let alone download new music, let alone make a playlist (something I used to enjoy quite a bit).

It's kind of overwhelming when you all of the sudden have access to almost any music you'd like, and I did not know where to begin. Rather than trying to rack my brain, or spend time I simply don't have perusing the Internet, I decided to visit my friend Madison's blog.

Okay, so especially since I recently became a mother, I just straight up don't have time to stay in the loop with the cool jams. I don't listen to popular music, I've been listening to the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack for 3 months and the last 5 videos in my YouTube history are Bob Seger. I used to listen to a wider variety of music, I also used to go to a lot of local shows. These days, I'm just grateful to have cool friends that are in the know, who I can go to for guidance on what to listen to in (Summer) 2015. It is so convenient to be able to go to one website and get all the information I need quickly and easily. I trust my girl Madi's taste in music, so a lot of the times I will download bands she recommends even if I've never heard of them. 9/10 times she nails it. One of her favourite musicians is Kate Bush, what more do you need to know?

If you live in London, Ontario, you will especially appreciate her selection, as she tries to include as much local music as possible. Well, the good stuff. Chances are if you're a band in the city, and you're not half-bad, she will play you- or has played you. I strongly suggest talking to her about "trading press" because if she likes you, aside from promoting you on her blog she can also play you on the radio! Wolfwizard Radio is every Thursday morning from 9-11AM on CHRW 94.9fm (or online at chrwradio.ca).

All Beyoncé all day every day!!!!!!!!! Can you believe that as of January 7th, Blue Ivy Carter is one year old? After Mrs. Carter gave birth to her first born, I was sure she was going to be off the map for a while. I figured she'd be busy as hell; juggling being a mom and the queen of the world. Did I expect her to disappear completely? (See what I did there?) Of course not. But I was not expecting what she hit us with: a brand new full length album at the end of 2013. Her fifth studio album is a "visual album" complete with 14 track and 14 videos to accompany them. How was it was kept a secret until its release? How much of a genius is Queen Bey for hitting us all with this in the manner that she did? Shame on me for even thinking she might be sleeping on us. The woman doesn't stop for one second - constantly creating, and doing, and being, and inspiring. Every day I remind myself: You have the same amount of hours in a day as Beyoncé.

I remember December 13 well, it started like any other day, until I checked my phone and saw I had a message from my roomate. If there were a bigger Beyoncé fan than I, it would have to be Jess. Like most girls our age, she grew up on Destiny's Child. As a singer, she admires Bey's incredible natural talent and we BOTH embody that "independent-woman-diva-FLAWLESS-bad-bitch" attitude. It was a long summer of blasting Miley's Bangerz non-stop, but it's a Beyoncé winter. Since the album came out, we have listened to it almost exclusively. We can't stop. Jess messaged me early on in the day and said that Beyoncé had released a new album, and I almost didn't believe her. It took some time to sink in, and of course Jess bought it on iTunes right away. It was all I could talk about for the first week or two and the more we played the album, the more I became familiar with it, and the more I fell in love. On Facebook, it was all my friends were talking about. I listened to it while I cooked, while I cleaned, while getting ready to go out, while out walking, before bed. Nothing else. And I didn't feel bad because I knew I wasn't the only one. Jess never once has said "not Beyoncé again, put something else on!" and for that I am so grateful. Girls love Beyoncé. Even guys love Beyoncé! My proudest moment of the month of December was probably the night my boyfriend came home from work and told me that he had Beyoncé stuck in his head all night. I asked what song and he said "I don't know, the one with the really good beat". Well they all have really good beats, could you be more specific? "The one about sneezing on the beat" It was Partition. Of course it was Partition.

Let's be real, everyone loves Beyoncé! ALMOST everyone. I did see a girl I know post a status the other day that said "I hate Beyoncé." but I unfriended her right away. The status only got 12 likes and two people agreeing, seven people against it. Really? You HATE Beyoncé? I'm so sure that this world famous celebrity that you've never met has done so much to you, personally, that you feel actual hatred towards her. Do you hate her music? If the answer if yes, you're probably lying, because it's no fluke that she's the most successful female pop star on the planet. It's wasn't luck or chance that got her 17 Grammy Awards, 11 MTV Video Music Awards, three American Music Awards, a Billboard Millennium Award, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame with Destiny's Child. This last album was produced by Justin Timberlake, Timbaland, and Pharrell Williams. But right, what do they know about music? Probably nothing. Even if you don't like her music, who cares. Why do you actually think anyone gives a shit about a particular artist that you DON'T like? Yeah, why don't you keep spewing out things you don't like, everyone is just dying to hear about it, because you're so cool. Somebody called this girl out for being jealous, but how I see it, is snobbery or superiority. Like, "Everyone on the planet likes Beyoncé so I'm just going to say I really hate her to be different" Wow, boring. I don't care if you genuinely don't like her or her music but I don't see any reason to go out of your way to say so. If you do go out of your way to say so, I'm going to go out of my way to question it because when it comes to somebody who is so damn perfect, I'm gonna be skeptical if you say you hate them. What is there to hate? I'd really like to know.

According to Wikipedia, "Drunk in Love" is about how much Beyoncé likes having sex with Jay-Z. 'Nuff said. It's my new drinking song, it is everything that is Beyoncé because it makes me feel powerful and sexy and badass and it's super fun to sing at the top of your lungs. Now, I know Bey has been getting some flack lately due to this song, and specifically Jay's verse, where he raps about Tina Turner and Ike Turner and references the abuse Tina suffered as portrayed in the movie "What's Love Got To Do With It?" The lyrics are: "Catch a charge I might, beat the box up like Mike, in '97 I bite, I'm Ike, Turner, turn up, baby no I don't play, now eat the cake, Anna Mae, said, "Eat the cake, Anna Mae!" Anna Mae is Tina Turner's given name. Basically, Ike was extremely abusive to Tina in their years together and in the movie his violence toward her is displayed as well as a particular scene where he forces her to eat cake. I'm not going to go into too much detail because A) I had written the majority of this blog post before the Grammys and before I had a chance to read this article; and B) This is a post about Beyoncé and fashion mostly; the lyrics ARE Jay's and he should be the one held accountable. It is unfortunate, but it shouldn't take away from all of the good things Beyoncé has done, and all the positivity that will undoubtedly come from the release of this album. Some people question whether or not Beyoncé's "feminism" is a marketing ploy, but I don't agree with that. A lovely friend of mine, Nora, summed it up perfectly:  "I'm basking in the glory of her inter-sectional politics, whether or not it's a marketing ploy because it speaks to the masses and her target audience: young girls who are more likely to absorb the message of feminism than a reference to a Tina Turner biopic." Very fair, before this album I hadn't seen the biopic and the first few times I heard this song I honestly thought he was saying "Now eat the cake, anime!"


"XO" is the catchiest song on the album. It's most obviously the lead single and it's an instant classic. Something about it reminds me of the song "Hello" from I Am... Sasha Fierce. It's obviously about love, and it's one I like to sing to my boyfriend all the time. The lyrics are extremely simple but something about them, about the message of it all, is so romantic. "In the darkest night hour, I'll search through the crowd, your face is all that I see, I'll give you everything, baby love me lights out, you can turn my lights out." I'm picturing searching for your love through a crowded bar and just finding them and going home with them and how wonderful the simplicity of that can be. When you're really in love. It's just so good!!!!! The obvious choice as the main single for the album. Here are some shots from the filming of the video, taken from Bey's Tumblr:







According to Wikipedia, "Partition" is about having sex in a limousine (well duh). It starts out with a clip from what I presume is a live recording of Bey saying "Lemme hear you say 'Heyyyyyy Mrs. Carter'" and the crowd responds; and again "Lemme hear you say 'Heyyyyyy Mrs. Carter'" the crowd goes crazy, and Mrs. Carter says: "Gimme some!" and then the beat begins. There's definitely a French theme to the album because Partition includes a sample at the end which says "Est-ce que tu aimes le sexe? Le sexe. Je veux dire, l'activité physique. Le coït. Tu aimes ça? Tu ne t'intéresses pas au sexe? Les hommes pensent que les féministes détestent le sexe, mais c'est une activité très stimulante et naturelle que les femmes adorent." it directly translates to "Do you like sex? Sex. I mean, the physical activity. Fucking. Do you like it? You're not interested in sex? Men think that feminists hate sex, but it's a very stimulating and natural activity that women love." Although I have yet to find legitimate proof that the origin of the sample is what I think it is, I am quite certain it is a quote from the Coen brothers movie The Big Lebowski. The clip from the movie, in French, is almost word for word. You don't need to know how often me and my roommate quote this song. And if you didn't know before, (because I didn't at first) the partition is that part of a limousine that separates the driver and the passengers and you can keep it closed (up) or roll it down.

Wikipedia also says that "Blow" is about how Knowles likes being given cunnilingus. I figured that was pretty obvious; "I can't wait til I get home so you can tear that cherry out." At the end of the song there's more French "Je ne sais quoi" which means "I don't know" and some Haitain Creole slang "Chéri, Mvlew Aswe a, se net al kole" which I believe means "Darling I want you, tonight is on." Mmm, skittles.

"***Flawless" might be the most important song on the album. A big theme of the album is feminism, and Beyonce continues to show how important feminism is to her and her music. Even before she called herself a feminist, even back in the Destiny's Child days, she has always been my feminist icon. She is someone that every girl can look up to. She's a motivator, an inspiration, a role model, a diva. She's like Diana Ross, but nicer. She oozes confidence and promotes individuality, ambition, desire and strength. I want to be successful like her. I literally believe in myself more because I know Beyonce believes in me; and in all women. Flawless is my new anthem. It's the most quotable song on the album, if not solely for: "I woke up like dis, I woke up like dis." The song samples Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, a Nigerian writer who did a TED Talk called "Why We Should All be Feminists". The sample is: "We teach girls to shrink themselves, to make themselves smaller. We say to girls: 'You can have ambition, but not too much. You should aim to be successful, but not too successful, otherwise you will threaten the man.' Because I am female, I am expected to aspire to marriage. I am expected to make my life choices, always keeping in mind that marriage is the most important. Now marriage can be a source of joy and love and mutual support. But why do we teach girls to aspire to marriage, and we don't teach boys the same? We raise girls to each other as competitors, not for jobs or for accomplishments, but for the attention of men. We teach girls that they cannot be sexual beings in the way that boys are. Feminist: the person who believes in the social, political, and economic equality of the sexes." Silly me, I've got to stay on top of the cool upcoming artists. I don't want to wait around for someone to tell me what new mainstream artist I should listen to. It's so much more exciting and awesome when you discover a band just starting out, reletively underground still. That's when the best stuff happens; there are so few musicians that I listen to and think "wow, I really don't like their early stuff" THAT NEVER HAPPENS! However, as a musician progresses, if I like them, I will wait anxiously for them to come out with more, more material. And hopefully they'll continue and grow and provide good shit the whole way through.

I had a ditsy moment the other day when I was looking at a blog. The autoplay music came on in my headphones, and usually that pisses me off. Instead I was hypnotized because it sounded so dreamy. I listened to it on repeat a few times, then messaged the owner of said blog, and... duh! it's Rose Keeler-Schäffeler, also known as KEEL HER

Turns out I've been following her on Tumblr for a while now, not knowing about her musical talent. After I sent her a message, she added me to Facebook! What a friendly gal.

What I know about Rose: she has great taste in .gifs and "net art". She likes cats. She's British! She is very pretty. Need I say more? Aside from a huge fan base on Tumblr, I predict she's gonna be adored by all the chicks just like me. Anyone who is into riot grrrl, and surfer/skater culture, drugs, rebellion, boys and sex and stuff. She has a song called "Steve Holt" so she is pretty much perfect; anyone who likes Arrested Development is OK in my books. She's been making music for a while and deserves all the love and recognition I can give because she is truly talented.

I am really obsessed with good album artwork it's almost my favourite thing about music and musicians taste in cover art. Tells a lot about a band and the aritsts in my opinion. Kim Althea Gordon; musician, vocalist, artist, record producer, video director, actress. I have a soft spot for female bassists. Strangely enough I don't think too many people really know about her! Or maybe it's just the people I hang out with. I mean, I did just start getting interested in her work recently..


Sonic Youth was just one of those bands for me growing up. I knew the name, 'cause of course they were a vital part of the music industry in the 90's, (and 80's) but I never really knew much about them. Couldn't name a song, or even tell you what type of genre they were. I assumed Alternative Rock but then again what did I know. But you've gotta assume they're half-decent, what with them being on the Simpsons and all... Anyways, I've been downloading a lot of their stuff lately and did some reading on the bandmates that I was less familiar with, mainly everyone but Thurston Moore. His name is always getting thrown around in Rolling Stone. And call me sexist, but I just love female musicians. Decent ones of course. Maybe it's just an affinity due to a feeling of understanding and awareness.. The raw power and indifferent confidence I see in these various "role models" of mine. Such as Kim Gordon. The whole persona to me is just so admirable.

She's a visual artist. It took up most of her time before she joined/formed Sonic Youth. I'm really interested in her stuff, too. I don't really know how to describe it. You can make your own mind up:


Aside from directing music videos with Spike Jonze, appearing on Gossip Girl, producing Hole records, and playing benefit concerts with Cat Power for her daughter's school in Massachussets, Kim Gordon has dabbled into the world of fashion. This is where I started to really crush on her.

Her clothing company X-Girl was founded in '89. Grunge, alternative and sorts of anti-fashion were featured. But as of right now the product is going to remain a mystery. Not only can I not find a website mentioning the brand other than Wikipedia, I can't find a single picture of merchandise, or even a hint as to where to buy it. I'll have to do some more digging, other than on the Internet.. BUT I did learn that X-Girl is a sister company to a little brand called X-Large, YEAH THAT SAME X-LARGE THAT MIKE D IS INVOLVED WITH. I'm beginining to think that both brands would be easily accessible in Japan, not so much over here. That's the word on the street, at least.

But back to KG; she more recently launched a limited edition line called Mirror/Dash (September '08). Originally inspired by fashion icon Françoise Hardy, it is Kim Gordon's solution to the apparent need for "clothes for cool moms" which I can dig. It does have a website but all it features is this f*cking Hardy Jacket that was actually all she had released up until February 16th, 2009, when her collaboration with Urban Outfitters was released. The jacket was originally sold in retail for $415, and was a limited edition item in which only 50 were made. As far as Ebay goes, it's probably as hard to find one of these gems as it is to find an X-Girl tee.
